Within seconds, he knows the answer is the assault on Pearl Harbor.
Kevin is one of eight Evansville High School students competing in the National Academic Quiz Tournament this weekend in Rosemont, Illinois. It's the national championship of quiz bowl. And Evansville's two teams are the only Wisconsin teams competing in the pocket-sized school sectionalization — a field of 55 teams from beyond the country.
"I'm really excited about information technology," Kevin said. "I think information technology's going to be a lot of fun no matter how well we practice, but I am looking to practise pretty well. And I call up we're well prepared for it and I think both teams can do very well."
"I'm a fiddling nervous," he added, "but I'll go over it."
The two four-person teams will compete in a serial of head-to-head matches consisting of twenty toss-upwardly questions, each worth x points. Moderators read the question — commonly consisting of several sentences — and the showtime person to buzz in gets to answer.
Teams cannot hash out, only if the role player answers correctly, the squad gets an exclusive shot at three bonus questions, worth an additional ten points each.
The goal is speed.

Quiz basin advisor and math teacher Scott Anderson said the squad has a strategy.
"We are a buzz first squad," Anderson said. "My big thing is we can't win unless we're the first to buzz in. And so, we will take our shots where some teams will wait back, and they desire to be sure they're right. Our philosophy has always been, through all these competitions, we will buzz."
Answering a question incorrectly means a five-indicate deduction, but Anderson said the risk is worth it. Considering teams can earn up to 45 points each round, the scores can swing wildly.
"When y'all get a couple of teams that are competitive all the time, that last couple of questions becomes and then tense, "Anderson said. "That's the thrill."
And that excitement is what Kevin loves near quiz bowl, which he's competed in since center school.
"You're really focused in, zeroed in on the moment. And so at the same fourth dimension, you lot're likewise only having fun with some of your friends. And y'all know, just showing what you know and how much you practiced. And so information technology's a really good mix. And then by the end of the day, you're simply completely exhausted."
His teammate, 17-year-old senior Elijah Winchel, has a expert way to describe it.
"It's like fun with tension," he said. "It's like a mental sport."
'A pretty tight-knit petty team'
But you lot don't go to Carnegie Hall (or the Hyatt Regency in Rosemont, Illinois) without practise, practice, practice.
Anderson said the team meets twice a week — once during homeroom and in one case subsequently school. They use the time to review questions and talk strategy. And they take a divide and conquer arroyo to content areas.
Elijah'southward strengths are paintings and psychology. He's been using a flashcard app to brush up on art, musicals and composers.
But he leans on teammates for other questions.
"My history is bad," Elijah said. "Simply I know Kevin would accept gotten it before me, and since he's on the same team as me, I can trust him to go that so I don't have to really worry."
Kevin'southward favorite subjects are history and mythology. To prep, he listens to audio of by national championships. When he finds gaps in his knowledge, he finds a book or an commodity to read.
Through practice and contest, Anderson said the students are really supportive of one another. And they have fun together.
They accept a blueish Matchbox automobile that comes to every competition for practiced luck. And they have a running joke for literature questions: when in uncertainty, approximate Wuthering Heights.
"We're a pretty tight-knit little squad, and we've kind of made (quiz bowl) our thing," Anderson said.
For now, the club has viii students — enough for 2 teams. But Anderson has big plans for the future.

Both Kevin and Elijah program to continue quiz bowling when they head off to higher in the fall — Kevin to George Washington University in Washington, D.C. and Elijah to study video game design at UW-Whitewater.
Merely for now, they're focused on the final contest of the season. After an entirely virtual flavor in 2020, they're thrilled to exist back in person.
The championships brainstorm Friday with practice games, followed by round-robin preliminary competition on Saturday. The meridian teams will advance to the playoffs on Sunday.
Anderson said he's confident in their small-simply-mighty team.
"We're always fighting above our weight. We're running with some very large schools, just at the aforementioned time, we're always competitive," he said. "We are going to represent Evansville and the state of Wisconsin extremely well. I am proud of the piece of work we've done. And I know equally their advisor that they have put the practice in, and they will represent united states of america extremely well."
